AMPP Case Study: Virginia Mason Medical Center
Partner Profile:
A private, non-profit organization offering a system of integrated health services, including 380 physicians offering both primary and specialized care, a network of 16 neighborhood clinics and occupational medical facilities, a 282-bed acute care facility, a research center, a skilled nursing facility and a day health center for people living with various complex needs.

Business Challenge:
VMMC was experiencing the common dilemma of requiring upgrades to more state of the art equipment while lacking the necessary capital to acquire and maintain the equipment. There was also a need to increase the center’s revenue while maintaining nursing satisfaction and meeting or exceeding all patient care needs.

UHS Solution:
Institute a comprehensive and customized Asset Management Partnership Program. The AMPP combined a combination of lease buyouts, capital avoidance strategies, additional revenue through captured charges, reduced staffing expenses, and savings designed to provide dramatic financial improvements. At the same time it introduced a fleet of standardized and state of the art equipment. UHS overtook responsibility for all aspects of equipment management including pick up and distribution, maintenance and repair, maintaining all documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements and coordinating and providing inservice training on equipment.

Results:
After the customized Asset Management Partnership Program was instituted by UHS, VMMC experienced substantial financial savings. Over a 24-month period, a total financial improvement of $3,863,151 or $160,965 each month was realized by the Center. The Center also avoided spending $544,284 on additional movable medical equipment as a result of UHS efforts, and realized a 51% capitated rate with a benefit of $438,935 in additional revenue.

Several operational improvements were also seen at VMMC in the areas of:

  • Equipment and staffing
  • Equipment tracking and reporting/regulatory compliance
  • Nursing satisfaction
  • Equipment Inspection
