General Catalyst Unveils 15 Health System Partners to Drive Digital Transformation

Cambridge (November 15, 2022) — General Catalyst, a leading venture capital firm ushering in a new era of patient care through health assurance investments and collaboration, today announced its group of 15 health system partners across the U.S. and U.K. Collectively, we believe this dynamic group will serve as a first-of-its-kind strategic ecosystem, working with technology and health companies to deliver solutions that build accessible, affordable and effective care models for diverse communities, including approximately 10% of the United States population across 43 states.

General Catalyst announced its first strategic partnership with HCA in August 2021 and continues to further its mission through its Health Assurance strategy. After announcing four more health system collaborators in the last year — Jefferson, Intermountain Healthcare and WellSpan Health, as well as its first international partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, the largest academic hospital system in the U.K. — General Catalyst today unveiled 10 additional partners:

  • Banner Health
  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
  • Hackensack Meridian Health
  • Health First
  • MetroHealth
  • OhioHealth
  • The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
  • UC Davis Health
  • UCI Health
  • Universal Health Services (UHS)

“In order to make health assurance a reality, we are partnering with innovative and intentional health systems that share our desire to drive digital transformation and impactful change,” said Daryl Tol, General Catalyst’s Head of Health Assurance Ecosystem. “These partnerships open the door for radical collaboration: health systems have the opportunity to work with startups, scale existing products, and even collaborate on new technologies. In turn, health technology companies can innovate, design and test products on the ground. The responsibility to improve care for 10% of the population is not lost on us and all parties are eager to tackle the challenges that lie ahead, tap each other’s strengths and improve our health systems.”

“MetroHealth’s innovative and courageous approach to healthcare for all has delivered value to our patients, community, and our organization. Our focus on innovation, and partnership is based on a relentless pursuit of solutions to support our care for all. The General Catalyst team wants to accelerate the transformation of all healthcare through its Health Assurance Network. As the only Essential safety-net system in the network, I believe that working with the like-minded health systems, General Catalyst, and its partners will lead us to find solutions, create change and open the doors of opportunity.” – Dr. Akram Boutros, President and CEO of MetroHealth

“Our industry is undergoing a major transformation in just about every facet of what we do. The last several years have underscored that we have to find new ways to deliver high-quality and efficient healthcare, as well as the need to get upstream to address holistic health and wellness,” said Patrick J. Cawley, MD, MUSC Health CEO and Executive Vice President of Health Affairs, University. “Venture capital is continuing to play a larger role in the healthcare industry, and this collaboration will bring together the collective wisdom and expertise of its members and General Catalyst so that, together, we can move faster and more effectively toward digitally-enabled and patient and family-centered care as the norm in the U.S.”

“Banner’s partnership with General Catalyst connects two strong organizations committed to moving toward a population health approach. Their focus on health assurance – moving from ‘sick care’ to proactively keeping people well – is fully in line with Banner’s growth plans and our commitment to innovation.” – Scott Nordlund, EVP and Chief Strategy and Growth Officer of Banner Health

“Health First is excited to partner with General Catalyst, along with some of the most recognizable names in healthcare across the United States. Our most important mission and focus is on continually improving the wellness of the customers we serve, and this partnership will enable the collegial sharing of information and best practices that will allow us all to create stronger and healthier communities.” – Drew Rector, EVP and Chief Strategy Officer, Health First

“UHS is pleased to partner with this impressive and dynamic collaborative on future-oriented technology solutions. As one of the nation’s largest providers of behavioral health services, we are particularly focused on innovation that has the potential to enhance operations, care delivery and patient experience in both behavioral health and acute care settings. Further, new models that enhance accessibility, drive efficiencies and improve quality will benefit all patients across the healthcare continuum,” said Marc Miller, President and CEO, Universal Health Services.

“UCI Health looks forward to partnering with an enterprise that shares our commitment to transforming healthcare through digital innovation. As the only academic health system in one of the nation’s largest counties, UCI Health is dedicated to advancing world class care and health equity for individuals and communities. We firmly believe that can be achieved by partnering with forward-thinking organizations like General Catalyst and their Health Assurance Network.” – Chad T. Lefteris, CEO, UCI Health

This group covers a wide array of communities, needs and specialties, ranging from rural and urban communities, academic and public systems, children’s and adult patient focus, large and small patient populations, and more. This will enable General Catalyst, the health systems and health assurance partners to understand the range of health needs for each individual community, and then apply those learnings to other health systems throughout the US. The 15 health systems will also have opportunities to collaborate together, share learnings and work to solve both their own and the industry's biggest challenges.
